1. GREAT RIVERS ENVIRONMENTAL LAW CENTER TO VISIT ROLLA

Kathleen Henry and Sarah Willey, President and Outreach Director of Great Rivers Environmental Law Center, will visit Rolla on Monday, November 27. Please come to Panera in Rolla between 1:00 and 2:30 pm to meet Katy and Sarah. This event is an open forum with no set agenda.

Great Rivers is the public-interest law center that saved Buehler Park from being turned into a restaurant and won a landmark victory when the Courts ruled for the first time since 1910 that users of public property have standing in Missouri's Courts to maintain that public use.

If you have not done so recently, please consider making a donation to Great Rivers Environmental Law Center. Checks can be mailed to Great Rivers Environmental Law Center, 319 No. Fourth St., Suite 800, St. Louis, MO 63102. Great Rivers is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Donations can also be made online from Great Rivers' website. Please help Great Rivers so they can continue to help others as they helped us.

2. UPGRADES TO BUEHLER PARK

Buehler Park now has an expanded and resurfaced parking lot and a new sewer line that runs underneath the parking lot. Buehler Park was also promised a new water line this Fall. We hope the City installs it soon.

3. DOG-PARK

At a public hearing before the Rolla City Council in June, seven citizens testified against building a dog-park in Buehler Park. The Chamber of Commerce, Royal Canin Pet Food and Kent Bagnall, owner of Kent Jewelry in Rolla, testified in favor of building a dog-park in Buehler Park. Commercial interests won out, and in July the Rolla City Council adopted the draft master plan as presented.

The master plan calls for a dog-park of about 1/2 acre to be built with private money. Thanks to your activism, this is less than half the size of the original proposal and lies totally within the meadow area skirting the forested area and play equipment

This battle is not over. — More later.

Kent Bagnall, owner of Kent Jewelry, and Crystal Watson, representing Royal Canin, are attempting to raise money by selling “naming rights” to the dog-park. The City has given them permission to do so.

Talk about crass commercialism. One has to wonder why Kent Jewelry and Royal Canin don't buy up the naming rights themselves.

I would also wonder about any business that puts its name on that dog-park. Generally, when a business takes sides on controversial issues, it is bound to drive away more business than it attracts.

4. TREES

The 46 trees we have planted in Buehler Park since the Courts ruled in 2007 that Buehler must remain a park have gone into winter dormancy. The Fall colors were disappointing this year — probably due to the late Summer / early Fall dry spell and the October heat wave.

I am doing less summer watering as my arthritis progresses. Also the City does not permit me to use my car to carry water onto the park anymore.
