1. TREES

The four flowering dogwoods which our chief forester Ross Melick donated and planted in March have leafed out. The other 31 young trees that we planted since our court victory seem to have survived last summer's drought. Most are doing well.

For those of you who can't get to Buehler Park, I'm attaching photos.

2. WEATHER

This Spring our weather has been nothing short of fantastic! The trees love this cool wet weather. Pray for it to continue! The three month forecast for this area looks good.

3. WATER LINE TO BUEHLER PARK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED

The water line to Buehler Park still needs to be replaced at an estimated cost of $6 to $8 thousand. There has been no water at Buehler for two years now. Unfortunately, the City has not budgeted any money to replace the water line. Calls or emails to city officials would be helpful.

4. ONE PTERODACTYL SWING REMOVED

One of the pterodactyl swings lost a wing over the St. Patrick's day festivities (possibly from too many inebriated college students climbing on it at the same time). The Parks and Recreation Department has removed it as the undamaged half was no longer safe. Unfortunately the city has no plans to replace it. Calls or emails to city officials would be helpful.

5. BUEHLER PARK USED BY MANY

Almost every time I visit Buehler Park, there are people there enjoying the park, often travelers who have pulled off the interstate for a rest. Attached is a photo of a couple with a baby on the swing. Maybe someday city officials will wake up and realize what a treasure Buehler Park is and replace or repair all the equipment that has broken over the years.

6. BUEHLER PARK COMES TO ISTANBUL

It's amazing how urbanites love their small open spaces and are willing to go to battle against governments, police and developers for their parks. Plans by Turkey's ruling elite to take Taksim Gezi Park, the last bit of public open space in Istanbul for a shopping mall, sparked a protest that has grown in spite of police repression, violence. and copious amounts of pepper spray. The protests now threaten to topple the government of prime minister Erdogan. One protester remarked: "Each of us will guard a tree, and in the morning, we will give a report to the birds." Erdogan would have done well to have learned the lesson of Rolla's Buehler Park.

We Represent the Trees

Turkish Uprising Shows No Let Up

Throughout Rolla's 11 year battle over Buehler Park, the Rolla police force remained neutral and professional in spite of attempts by at least one mayor to politicize the police force. Kudos to the Rolla police.

7. WEBSITE

I am planning to redo our website, http://buehlerpark.org, over the summer. Check it out regularly.

8. GREAT RIVERS ENVIRONMENTAL LAW CENTER.

Thanks to everyone who donated to Great Rivers Environmental Law Center.

Great Rivers has already won a major victory for the environment in 2013. Representing Renew Missouri, Great Rivers successfully argued before the Western Court of Appeals that the rules promulgated by the Public Service Commission concerning Missouri's utility-funded energy conservation programs should be upheld.

Great Rivers Environmental Law Center has been named among the best law firms by U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers in America.

Last year Best Lawyers honored Great Rivers general counsel, Bruce Morrison, as St. Louis Environmental Litigation Lawyer of the Year.

Were it not for Great Rivers, Buehler Park would have ceased to exist years ago. Please continue to give generously if you can, so they can help others as they helped us. Checks can be made out to Great Rivers Environmental Law Center and sent to Great Rivers Environmental Law Center, 705 Olive Street, Suite 614, St. Louis, MO 63101. Great Rivers is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Donations can also be made online from Great Rivers' website.
